Medical Marijuana and E-Cigs
Medical marijuana is now legal in 18 states plus Washington, DC. With the newly passed legalization of recreational marijuana in Washington State and Colorado, it seems that the trend is moving in the legalization direction. Each state has it’s own laws, and there are even county laws within states that differ in the way you can cultivate, buy, or use marijuana, either for personal recreational use or for medicinal uses.
But one thing is agreed upon, and that is that if there’s an alternative way to use the medicinal compounds in marijuana besides smoking, the alternative is healthier. The alternatives today include eating baked goods made with marijuana or using a vaporizer or atomizer. And using a vaporizer or atomizer is considered to be a preferred alternative to smoking, because when you burn and smoke marijuana, you also inhale tar. Does that mean we will start to see liquid medical cannabis that can be used with electronic cigarettes?
If other applications of vaporizer and atomizer technology are appropriate for the use of medical marijuana, it seems that using the atomizer in an electronic cigarette would be just as effective as any other atomizer.
What’s in Medical Marijuana? And Can it be Extracted?
So what is it in marijuana that is good for medical uses? It turns out that the majority of studies on medical marijuana use have focused on the 80 different cannabinoids found in marijuana. These include tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound, cannabidiol, cannabigerol, and carophyllene. There have been a few synthetic medications produced in the US and Canada which were designed based on cannabinoids. These are taken orally.
It turns out that it is possible to extract cannabinoids from marijuana to produce a liquid form of the medically helpful compounds. And you can in fact use that liquid form in a vaporizer or atomizer, inhaling the compounds you want but avoiding the tar and smoke that is created when you burn the marijuana. It may be that in the near future we will see the electronic cigarette used as a medical marijuana dispensary option that is considered a better method than smoking.
However, at this point it is not advisable to use anything in your electronic cigarette that is not specifically made for use with the ecig atomizers. The production of vapor and the concentration of e-liquids work together, and there is no guarantee that any other liquid will be formulated correctly or safely.
