Electronic cigarettes are a relatively newer product to the industry. With aspirations to become a suitable alternative to tobacco cigarettes, the product took hold on a global scale relatively quickly. However, the opposition to the product was raised just as quickly and met with a ferocious outcry to the products usage. Why was this so? Certainly with all of the social trends pointing people in the direction of leading healthier lives without the unnecessary poisons that are in everyday products, people would welcome an alternative to a product that has been at the center of many debates and campaigns. However, this does not seem to be the case.
The tobacco industry, on the other hand, would seem to be the biggest opposition to the idea of electronic cigarettes. Sales have been declining in the tobacco industry since 1998 and there have been no campaigns or efforts, at least none that are apparent, that would look to have the industry rebound from the negative press that they receive on a constant basis.
In a surprising turn of events, it would appear that the tobacco industry has become an advocate of the electronic cigarette industry.
Most notably are the three largest tobacco companies making headlines in regard to the electronic cigarette industry. Lorillard, the third largest tobacco company recently purchase Blu Ecigs for $135 million, becoming one of the first tobacco companies in the industry to have a smokeless electronic alternative to their tobacco products. Altria, owner of the Marlboro brand, has plans to release their own line of electronic cigarette to compete with the second largest company, Reynolds American's Vuse electronic cigarette line. It would seem that the tobacco is embracing the new trend in an open-minded manner. The sales figures do not lie.
Again, it seems that the industry that would be most threatened by the presence of electronic cigarettes would be the one to be for the promotion of the product. People will argue until they are blue in the face about the merits or the hazards of electronic cigarettes. Unfortunately, there will always be the discussion as long as the topic remains as murky as it does now. So where will the industry of electronic cigarettes lead to next. Until more research is completed and more data is compiled to back the arguments in favor of one side or the other, the electronic cigarette will appear to remain strong as the new up-and-coming product to be the solution to defeating the tobacco cigarette.
